CONFERENCE – BRIEF ABSTRACT:

The focus of my presentation will be “An Invisible Line”, an experiment about the interconnection between human expressive full-body movement, gesture analysis and sound and interface design. This work has been partially supported by the EU-Culture2007 Project CO.ME.Di.A, and the institutional partners were IRCAM – Paris, Casa Paganini – InfoMus Lab (DIST – University of Genoa) and The Hochschule für Musik und Theater – Hamburg.

“An Invisible Line” was an interactive, web based installation : a room in Kampnagel, Hamburg, Germany was connected via Internet with another room in Casa Paganini, Genova, Italy. The systems in each room exchanged very simple data (mostly, movement analysis), while the users could use only a very lacking visual representation of their partners on line. The interaction had to be found mostly using audio cues, and this process often came to look like a virtual dance.

For my presentation I’ll show the analysis algorithms that we used, the sonification methods, the strategies that we used to design the interaction process, and a few videos showing people interacting during the opening night.
